John Francis Dodge was born in 1864 in Michigan and his brother Horace Elgin in 1868.\u00a0 Early on they both showed a great interest in mechanics.\u00a0 They first worked in Canada where they were able to rent an area within the company that hired them and started by manufacturing bicycles.\u00a0 In a time of booming auto industry they soon reoriented their activity, meeting success with their customers.\u00a0 They returned to the USA in 1901 where they met Henry Ford.\u00a0 Their cooperation, the Dodge brothers having bought shares of the Ford company, was the real start of their great industrial adventure. \n \nThe Dodge WC series was a range of light military trucks produced by Dodge during World War II. The series included 4\u00d74 and 6\u00d76, with or without winch, weapon carriers, telephone installation trucks, ambulances, reconnaissance vehicles, mobile workshops and command cars. \n \nWC was a Dodge model code: W for 1941 and C for half-ton rating. The C code was retained for the \u00be\u00a0ton and 1\u00bd\u00a0ton 6\u00d76 Dodge.\u00a0 It was preceeded by the VC models.\u00a0 By a play of words, WC was also to mean Weapons Carrier. \n \nThe WC56 Truck, Command Reconnaissance, 3\/4 ton, 4\u00d74 without winch Dodge was a command and reconnaissance vehicle akin to a large Willys Jeep. It did not prove popular as it was heavier and not as maneuverable as the Jeep, and its distinctive profile made it a target. 21,156 were built. \n \nThe WC57 Truck, Command Reconnaissance, 3\/4 ton, 4\u00d74 with winch Dodge was identical to the WC56 but fitted with a Braden MU 25,000\u00a0lb \/ 2,268\u00a0kg capacity winch at the front bumper. \n \n6,010 were built.<\/p>\n\n
